TTE is gradually building a portfolio of low-carbon businesses that could account for 15-20% of sales by 2040. It aims for a portfolio of gross installed capacity of 35 gigawatts (GW) by 2025. TotalEnergies strives to become a net-zero carbon emission company by 2050 and has been taking steps to achieve the same. The hike in SAF production volumes places TotalEnergies among other high-volume SAF producers like Neste and Gevo Inc. TotalEnergies’ determination to increase SAF is a well-calculated decision from the company’s management to benefit from the rise of SAF on a global scale. The primary reason behind the massive expansion is the greater adoption of SAF by the aviation industry to reduce CO2 emissions. Per a Transparency Market Research report, the global sustainable aviation fuel market will reach $402 billion in 2050. The unit will have an annual production capacity of 80 gigawatt hours (GWh), sufficient to meet the annual energy needs of 16,000 people.

The construction of a biomethane production unit at the TotalEnergies Grandpuits site will further lower emissions and convert the organic waste from the biorefinery into biogas. TotalEnergies aims to produce 285,000 tons of SAF, nearly double the capacity announced in 2020. The primary objective behind this decision is to reduce transport-related emissions. TotalEnergies TTE announced that it increased the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and low-carbon energies at its Grandpuits site.
